About Howling Bluff Estate Winery
Located on the renowned Naramata Bench in the Okanagan Valley of British
Columbia, Howling Bluff Estate Winery is a small family-owned estate
winery that is the culmination of Luke Smith’s life long passion for
great wines. After giving up his career in the investment industry,
Luke, with his 21 year old son Daniel, is producing award-winning
wines which started with their first vintage in 2006. Dedicated to
producing small lots of fine wines, Luke and Daniel are building a
legacy, a family winery for their future generations.
Our Vineyard, our Wines
"Our goal is to produce remarkable wine year after year in small
lots."
"It is my firm belief that the world’s greatest wines come from small
wineries working with a vineyard. Our Summa Quies Vineyard is a no
compromise vineyard planted to exacting standards that allows us to
coax, cajole and nudge Mother Nature into helping us grow the best fruit
in the valley. The site was specifically chosen because of the deep clay
soils and for the gently rolling nature of the site, but certainly not
for the ease of farming. My son Daniel and I have worked for six years
building the vineyard ourselves. The intimate knowledge of the vineyard
we gained by doing all the work ourselves is put to use every day as we
strive to improve the quality of the harvest each year. "

The deep cut formed by Three Mile Creek, now Three Mile Rd., allows cool
evening air to flow over the vines at night while the rolling hills
leave no room for mild frost to pool and harm the grapes in the fall.
With a combination of overhead and drip irrigation and modern technology
we have the best of the new world helping the vines, but the old world
style still dominates our commitment to growing the best grapes
anywhere.
Daniel and I are in the vineyard every day walking the rows looking for
ways to help the vines be better. Only by personally getting our hands
dirty each and every day do we know our vineyard intimately so that we
can offer you the finest vintages, year after year.
Our passion creates wine for your pleasure.
Cheers, Luke Smith |
